Excitement in North Hollywood as High School Science Stars Shine Bright!

North Hollywood, CA – The bright minds at North Hollywood High School have made headlines this week after their stellar performance at the 33rd Annual LADWP Science Bowl held on March 8, 2025. The competition was fierce, but Team A from this vibrant school emerged victorious, earning the right to represent the Los Angeles region in the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl coming up in Washington, D.C. this April.

What’s the Science Bowl All About?

The Science Bowl is much more than a contest; it’s a thrilling game show experience where students showcase their teamwork and expertise in various science areas, including math and technology. This year, around 67 high school champions from across the nation will compete at the national level, providing an exciting challenge for all participants.

North Hollywood High School Team A, made up of dedicated and talented students, truly outshone the competition. Their impressive knowledge and quick thinking earned them a remarkable win. As their reward, each member of the team will walk away with a $1,250 Hitachi Scholarship to support their academic journey. How cool is that?

A Blossoming STEM Scene

In addition to individual scholarships, Team A’s triumph secured a generous $3,000 for their school’s Science Department and a coveted Melinda Rho Memorial Trophy. With such recognition, the school hopes to inspire a new generation of science enthusiasts and innovators!

But it wasn’t just North Hollywood High School that took the spotlight. The competition also saw remarkable performances from other talented schools. The Harvard-Westlake High School Team A showcased their skills, finishing in second place and receiving $1,000 scholarships each, along with $2,500 for their school. Quite an achievement!

The Hands-On Part of the Event

One of the most exciting components of the Science Bowl is the Hands-On Competition, where teams get a chance to test their practical skills. Teams were challenged to build a projectile launcher, and North Hollywood High School Team A not only created a device but also achieved the most accurate and farthest launch! What an impressive feat!

Meanwhile, the Franklin Lu Hands-On Trophy was awarded to Abraham Lincoln Senior High School Team B, each member receiving $750 scholarships. Other teams, including Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School Team B, El Camino Real Charter High School Team B, and Granada Hills Charter High School Team B, showcased their engineering skills, finishing closely behind.

Making Dreams Possible

Organizing an event of this magnitude required immense effort, and over 100 volunteers, primarily consisting of LADWP employees and their families, made it all happen. With a rich history dating back to 1991, the Science Bowl has welcomed more than 325,000 students into its fold, building interest in STEM fields and encouraging future generations to explore careers in science.

The LADWP, serving around 1.5 million electric customers and 713,000 water customers, aims to nurture talent through programs like the Science Bowl, reinforcing the importance of STEM education.

Looking Forward

As the North Hollywood High School Team A prepares for the national stage, there’s a buzz of excitement and anticipation in the air! With their passion for science and outstanding teamwork, who knows what other achievements lie ahead? The entire community is cheering them on, thrilled to see their local stars shine on such a grand platform!
