The North Hollywood High School Team A triumphed at the 33rd Annual LADWP Regional Science Bowl, securing their spot at the National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C. on March 8, 2025. With over 67 teams participating, they earned a $1,250 scholarship and their school will receive a $3,000 donation for the Science Department. This event highlighted the importance of teamwork and scientific knowledge, alongside recognizing efforts from other schools like Harvard-Westlake and Abraham Lincoln Senior High. North Hollywood is buzzing with excitement! The North Hollywood High School Team A has emerged victorious in the 33rd Annual LADWP Regional Science Bowl Competition, which took place on March 8, 2025. This impressive win means that the talented team will represent Los Angeles at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Science Bowl in Washington, D.C., this coming April. Talk about a spotlight moment for these young scientists!
This year, more than 67 high school champions from various regions will compete at the national level, with a proud cohort of eight teams from California stepping into the arena. The LADWP Science Bowl has been a cherished event since 1993, and many past regional championship teams have gone on to seize national titles. Notably, both North Hollywood High School and Venice High School have proudly claimed national championships in previous years.
The members of the triumphant North Hollywood High School Team A are not just taking home bragging rights; they will each receive a generous $1,250 Hitachi Scholarship. Their school will also benefit from a $3,000 donation for its Science Department along with the prestigious Melinda Rho Memorial Trophy. This trophy carries a special significance as it is named in memory of a beloved former LADWP employee who dedicated over 25 years to the Science Bowl.
Let’s not forget the impressive performances from other schools as well. The Harvard-Westlake High School Team A snagged second place, with each team member awarded a $1,000 scholarship and the school receiving $2,500. North Hollywood High School Team B came in third, while The Science Academy STEM Magnet Team A followed closely in fourth place.
During the competition, teams showcased their remarkable problem-solving and time management skills in the thrilling Hands-On Competition, where they constructed a projectile launch device. This was truly a test of ingenuity! The Abraham Lincoln Senior High School Team B took home the first-place Franklin Lu Hands-On Trophy, with each member receiving a $750 scholarship. The runners-up included Francisco Bravo Medical Magnet High School Team B in second place, while El Camino Real Charter High School Team B and Granada Hills Charter High School Team B secured third and fourth places, respectively.
The event wouldn’t have been a success without the robust support of sponsors including LADWP, the U.S. Department of Energy, the Hitachi Southern California Regional Community Action Committee, the Water and Power Community Credit Union, and the Los Angeles Unified School District. On top of that, over 100 dedicated volunteers—mainly LADWP employees and former Science Bowl participants—rolled up their sleeves to help organize this fantastic event.
The LADWP Science Bowl stands as one of the largest science-centric academic competitions in the nation, promoting a spirit of teamwork and scientific knowledge through an engaging game show format. Since its inception, the National Science Bowl program has seen over 325,000 students participate, which is no small feat!
